Mopar Muscle!

A tribute to goin' fast!

I'm a certified car nut. As a kid, I always loved cool autos - but our family was always saddled with the usual dismal array of station wagons and economical 4-doors.

As I got older, my interest grew but my means didn't. My high school had a substantial gathering of Mustangs, Camaros, and Grand Nationals, but my paper route wouldn't quite cover that...

In university, I was lucky enough to have the family cruiser passed down to me - a lusty '82 Buick Century. Sure, it was meek... but I loved that car like it was a freaking Ferrari. Over time I went through a few others:

  • '89 Volkswagen Fox: Bought near-new from my sister Ann. It was (and still is) the closest thing to a new car I'd ever owned. I had it for about six months before a student driver hit me head-on and totaled it.
  • '87 Honda CRX: I drove this car for an eternity and loved it. The only 2-seater I've ever had. It drove really well and got incredible gas mileage... and more importantly, it was dead-nuts reliable. I put close to 100,000 miles on it with only basic maintenance (oil changes, new brake pads, and a timing belt swap). When I decided to pull a trailer to California from Toronto, I knew it had to go... Sometimes I still regret selling it.
  • '92 Acura Integra: Had this car for only a couple of years, and never really developed a love for it. It's not that it wasn't a decent car - it was reliable and drove well - but it was booooring (four doors and white). I wasn't able to license it in the USA due to safety laws (no airbags, which they are supposed to have for that year apparently), so a few buddies led by the fearless Mike McInnis came down and road-trip'd it back to Toronto for me and sold it. Gotta love Canadians.
  • '96 Audi A4: This car drove like a dream... I loved this car! Lush, quick, and four-wheel drive! But alas, it was cursed for me and had to go. I was rear-ended in it (twice!) got a few speeding tickets (you would too in this car), it got broken into once, and it got "Yuppy" keyed on its door one night in the mission. To top it off, I took it in to get the thermostat replaced and it cost me $900! I reluctantly sold it.
  • 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport. All practical! Truck-based platform, 4WD, built like a tank, reasonable mileage and good peppiness from its 4.0L 6-cyl engine. Gets the job done right (and it's a Mopar). Sold in July '06
  • 1965 Plymouth Barracuda. A thrill ride... 340 4bbl putting out close to 400hp to the rear wheels. Went through a lot of tires while I had this car!

...which brings us to my current stable of cars.

My Daily Driver: 2006 Subaru Legacy GT. Fast, AWD, and reliable! TDC Stage 1 tune (275HP), BBS RG-R Wheels, Pirelli Pzero Nero M+S tires. Zero to Tahoe in no time flat...

My California Cruiser: 1967 Plymouth Satellite Convertible. Saving the best for last - this is the favorite car that I have ever owned. It's not the fastest, nor the most practical... but every time I get in it, put the top down and sunglasses on and go, I just feel good. Every time. It's like Prozac on wheels. I bought this car in May of 1997 after being inspired by my buddy's cool 1964 Ford Galaxie convertible. I thought, "yeah, California, convertible, classic... NO RUST!", took the plunge and have never looked back. It's fairly benign as far as 60's Mopars go: 318 cu in engine, highway gears... but that's not the point... This is the point:
