Pete Playing Music

After nearly a 20-year hiatus (and I'm only 38), I returned a couple of years ago to the instrument that I played in high school, the Sax.

Here are the main setups that I use, for the sax players out there:

  • Alto: 1927 Buescher True-tone (my grandfather's), very rare nickle plated, RPC .085 mpc, Vandoren Java #2.5 reed. The original horn I learned on, and it still looks and plays new!
  • Tenor #1: 1972 Selmer MkVI, RPC .120B mpc, Vandoren V16 #3 reed. The big daddy rabbit with the Fuzzy ears.
  • Tenor #2: 193? Conn 30M "Connqueror", restored in July '05 by Steve Stransky (Sarge) at World Wide Sax and Jason Dumars from Dumars Engraving, and it's KILLA (Restoration pics: Image 1 | Image 2 | Image 3 | Image 4 | Image 5.). Black roo pads, big resos, etc. Play it with mostly a Link STM refaced to .110 by ED Zentera and a Vandoren V16 #3 reed.
  • Tenor #3: 195? Buescher 400 "Top Hat and Cane", RPC .120B mpc, Vandoren V16 #3 reed. Great all-around sax.
  • Tenor #4 (Yes, I know it's ridiculous to have so many horns): 193? Conn Pan-American, also known as the "poor man's 10m". Got it cheap, use it for "questionable" gigs with whatever mouthpiece is appropriate...
  • Baritone: 196? Buescher 400 (a beater!). Great rough tone, but the ergos are a challenge for me... Played with a RPC .115 mouthpiece that I added a baffle to (based on pictures of Thom Keith's "B" baffle bari piece)

Below are Links to MP3 recordings of me playing (I use various play-along backing tracks, which are copyright their respective owners). For more recordings of me playing, also see my band's website, The Style Shop Jazz Ensemble.:
