Comparing Sounds of Vintage Saxophones
I happened to find myself one evening in my studio (er... spare bedroom) with four vintage saxophones - in order of age (approx),
a '39 Pan American (Conn 10m-ish stencil), a '39 Conn 30M "Connqueror",
a '55 Buescher 400 "Top Hat and Cane", and a '68 King Cleveland.
All horns are in decent playing shape, and I figured it might be interesting to set
up a blind comparison for other folks, since the "lesser" models (Pan Am and Cleveland) are worth
about a tenth of the "pro" models (the 400 and 30M, both vintage legends).
My setup is a RPC .120 B high-baffle mouthpiece, a Vandoren v16 #3 reed, and a BG rovner-type ligature on all the recordings.
Take a listen and see if your ears can pick out which one is which...
NEW 4-13-06: I've added a fifth horn to the mix... can you guess what it is? "Legend" or "Cheapo"?
